The free checks aren't a cut-down version. Each one runs the full pipeline: syntax, the domain's MX record, then our own SMTP check on port 25 that closes before DATA, so nobody gets an email. You get the same four results as a paying account, valid, invalid, catch_all or unknown, plus the role, disposable and free-provider flags.
Use them wherever you'd use paid checks. Paste one address into the free email verifier, upload a CSV, TXT or XLSX file to bulk verification, or call POST /v1/verify from your code. Developers also get sandbox keys that start with zb_test_, and sandbox calls never use a credit at all.
Free checks follow the paid billing rules. A valid, invalid or catch_all result uses one check. An unknown result, a duplicate in the same batch or an error from us uses nothing, so a stubborn Yahoo address doesn't eat into your 100. Every row in the download shows a billed flag, so you can count what was spent.
After the free tier, you pay per check: $5 for 1,000, $25 for 10,000 and $139 for 100,000. Credits never expire. A monthly plan costs 15% less than the same credits pay-as-you-go, and unused plan credits roll over while the plan is active. The pricing page lists every tier.
