What is a feedback loop?

Feedback loop, defined
A feedback loop is an agreement with a mailbox provider under which they forward you a copy of every message a recipient marked as spam, so you can suppress that person immediately.

Microsoft's JMRP, Yahoo's program, and the loops run by Comcast and others send you a redacted copy of the complained-about message. Your platform parses it and suppresses the address without you doing anything.

Registration is per provider and per sending IP, which is why sending platforms handle it centrally. On shared infrastructure, your provider is already enrolled and processing the reports on your behalf.

A complaint carries more weight than an unsubscribe, because it says the recipient could not find or did not trust your unsubscribe link. Suppressing them instantly is the minimum response.

Gmail's absence from this list is the significant gap, since it is often the largest share of a consumer list. The only view you get is a rate in a dashboard, with no way to act on individual cases.

Complaint data comes from your sending provider, not from verification, and nothing in our results reflects who has complained about you. Those are two separate suppression sources that both belong in your platform.

What a complaint report contains when it reaches you

Imagine an 80,000-message campaign. Over the next two days, 96 reports come back from the providers that run loops. Each one is an email in a standard layout called ARF, defined in RFC 5965. It has a short readable note, a machine-readable block with a line reading Feedback-Type: abuse, and a copy of your original message.

The recipient's address is often redacted from that copy. Providers consider the complainer's identity private, which creates an obvious problem if your goal is to suppress them. Sending platforms get around it by putting an opaque recipient ID into a custom header or into the return path, since those survive the redaction.

If you operate your own mail servers, check this before you enroll. Should your messages carry no per-recipient identifier outside the To line, you'll receive complaints you can't act on. You'd know somebody out of 80,000 was unhappy and be unable to say who.

Enrollment differs by provider, and one-click unsubscribe fills the gap

Enrollment isn't uniform across providers. Microsoft's program is tied to your sending IP addresses and sits alongside its SNDS data. Yahoo's is tied to the domain in your DKIM signature, so you enroll the signing domain and reports follow your mail across any IP. Gmail takes a different approach: senders add a Feedback-ID header, and Gmail reports complaint data in aggregate inside Postmaster Tools, never per recipient.

Since complaints at Gmail can't be traced to a person, your best lever there is giving people an easier exit than the spam button. One-click unsubscribe, defined in RFC 8058, adds two headers that let the mail app show its own unsubscribe link and process the request without the reader visiting a page.

Google and Yahoo have required this of bulk senders since 2024, along with honoring the request within two days. An unsubscribe costs you one reader. A complaint costs you that reader and also counts against your mail to everyone else at that provider.

Does Gmail have a feedback loop?

Not one that names individuals. Postmaster Tools reports a complaint rate in aggregate, and that is all Gmail exposes.

Do I need to register for feedback loops myself?

Only if you run your own sending infrastructure. Sending platforms enroll their IPs and process the reports for you.

What should happen when a complaint arrives?

Immediate, permanent suppression. Someone who reported you as spam should never receive another marketing message.
