How Zoho Mail answers a probe
What the server does when we open a connection and ask about one address.
- A local part with no mailbox behind it returns 550 5.1.1 Invalid recipient, with wording that is stable across their regions.
- Rate limits exist but are far gentler than Microsoft's, so a steady probe rate gets consistent results.
- Administrators can enable a catch-all, and small businesses often do because it means no inquiry gets lost. Where that is on, mailbox verification stops.
- The regional MX hostnames tell you which data center the tenant sits in, which is occasionally useful for privacy questions.

We resolve Zoho tenants normally and run the catch-all probe as we would anywhere else. Where a Zoho domain answers everything we label it catch_all, and the mx_host shows Zoho, because knowing the platform helps you judge how likely a real person is behind the address.
Sending to Zoho Mail mailboxes
Verification is one step. These are the things that decide whether the message lands.
- Zoho tenants are usually small teams, so role addresses such as info@ and contact@ are a larger share of the list than they would be on Microsoft 365.
- Regional data residency is a genuine consideration if your list includes EU recipients on Zoho's European instances.
- Deliverability into Zoho is straightforward compared to Google or Microsoft. Authentication and a clean list are close to sufficient.
smtpin or mx: two kinds of Zoho address
A lookup on September 19, 2026 shows the split. zoho.com and zohomail.com, the personal addresses, list smtpin.zoho.com and two numbered siblings as their mail hosts. A company that brings its own domain to Zoho publishes the mx.zoho.com family instead, or a regional version such as mx.zoho.com.au. Zoho's Indian personal domain, zoho.in, answers on smtpin.zoho.in.
Say you have 3,000 small-business leads from an Indian trade directory and 800 of the domains come back with a Zoho MX. You now know those 800 are business tenants, mostly tiny ones, before a single SMTP connection. Expect a lot of info@ and sales@ in that group. We flag role addresses from a fixed list, so an info@ row can be valid and role at once, and you decide whether a shared inbox is worth a cold email.
Checking whether anyone still runs the domain
A clean 250 from a Zoho tenant tells you the mailbox exists today. It can't tell you the business does. You can test that part yourself in a few minutes. Load the website, then look at the domain's WHOIS expiry date. A site that hasn't changed since 2021 and a domain due to lapse next month are better evidence than any mail server reply.
When a domain registration finally expires, the MX record disappears with it and every address on it turns invalid on the same day. Sometimes a new owner buys the name and sets up a catch-all to see what arrives, which is an unpleasant place for your invoices or newsletters to land. For small-tenant domains, re-verify before each campaign instead of once a year. Duplicates and unknowns aren't billed, so the repeat pass costs only the rows that get a verdict.

Comparatively, yes. It gives a clear rejection for addresses that do not exist and does not throttle a reasonable probe rate into uselessness, which puts it ahead of most large business platforms.
Why do Zoho domains carry so many role addresses?
Because the tenants are small. A four-person company routes inquiries through info@ or sales@ rather than naming individuals, so those addresses dominate the list.
What do the regional MX hostnames mean?
They name the data center holding the tenant's mail. An mx.zoho.eu record means the mailbox is hosted in Zoho's European region, which may matter for your own compliance position.
