Is email verification necessary?

Lists decay on their own. People change jobs, companies drop domains and mailboxes get shut down. Hunter tracked verified addresses for eight weeks and found 5.5% had degraded: 2.3% turned invalid and 3.2% became accept-all (Hunter, 4 November 2025). So a list you haven't mailed since spring already holds dead rows. See how often to clean a list for a schedule.

Where your list came from matters as much as its age. An export from a CRM, a lead database, a trade-show scanner or an old newsletter platform never proved its addresses work today. Your own signup form is safer, but only when it confirms the address, since typos like gmial.com get through a single opt-in form every day.

Bounces are what skipping it costs you. Amazon SES recommends keeping bounces under 2%, reviews an account at 5% and may pause sending at 10% (AWS enforcement FAQ, read 24 September 2026). Gmail asks bulk senders to keep reported spam below 0.3%. A hard bounce today counts against the domain you'll send from next month.

Next to that, a check is cheap. ZapBounce charges $5 for 1,000 checks and $25 for 10,000, and it never bills unknown results or duplicates. Our own SMTP check closes before DATA, so nobody on your list gets an email. Every account gets 100 free checks a month with no card, enough to test a sample of any list before you pay for more.

When can you skip a full pass? A double opt-in list that you mail every week, with a bounce rate that stays low, is being tested by every send. Guard it at the door with the real-time API on your signup form, and check what counts as a good bounce rate after each campaign.

Is email verification worth it for a small list?

Yes, when the list is older than a couple of months or came from outside your own signup form. Checking 1,000 addresses costs $5 with ZapBounce, and the first 100 checks each month are free. A handful of dead addresses in a small list pushes the bounce rate up fast.

Do I need to verify a double opt-in list?

Not before every send, as long as you mail it regularly. Confirmation proved each address worked when it joined. Re-verify a segment that has gone unmailed for two months or more, because addresses decay between sends.

What happens if I don't verify my email list?

Dead addresses hard-bounce and your bounce rate climbs. Amazon SES reviews an account at a 5% bounce rate and may pause sending at 10%. Every hard bounce also counts against your sender reputation.

Does email verification remove spam traps?

Verification removes invalid addresses and flags role and disposable ones. A pristine spam trap looks like a valid mailbox at the protocol level, so no verifier can single it out. Collecting addresses with confirmed opt-in keeps traps off the list.
