Hunter email verifier review
Hunter is an email finder first. Its verifier comes with the same account and spends the same credits. This review reads the verifier on Hunter's own pages: what a check costs, how the credits behave, and what Hunter's benchmark says.

The benchmark is Hunter's best contribution
On 3 November 2025 Hunter tested 15 verifiers on 3,000 real business addresses and published the method. Scores ran from 31.2% to 70.0%, and the top ten sat between 57.6% and 70.0%. Hunter printed its own score beside everyone else's.
Those numbers look low next to the 99% claims on most vendor sites. They count every address, including the ones no verifier could resolve. That is the right way to read any accuracy figure, and it's why ZapBounce reports coverage beside accuracy. Read what accuracy is actually achievable for the detail.
A verifier inside a finder's credit pool
Each Hunter check spends half a credit from the same pool you use to find addresses. If you prospect with Hunter every day, that's handy. You find a contact and check it in one place.
If you only verify, the math changes. You're buying a finder subscription to reach the verifier. ZapBounce is verification only, priced per address: $5 for 1,000, $25 for 10,000 and $139 for 100,000, pay-as-you-go. Every tier is on our pricing page.
Credits expire after twelve months
Hunter credits can be used for up to twelve months from purchase. Kickbox and Hunter are the two vendors we name with that clock. Most of the market now lets credits sit until you need them.
The clock matters if you clean lists in bursts. A big import in January and another in the next February can fall either side of it. ZapBounce credits never expire, so a pack bought for one project still works on the next. See do email verification credits expire.
Free allowance and unknown results
Hunter's free plan gives 50 credits a month, which covers 100 verifications at half a credit each. It renews monthly, which suits light, regular use.
Hunter's pages state no policy on billing unknown results. Ask before you run a large file. ZapBounce never bills an unknown or a duplicate and gives 100 free checks every month with no card. The side-by-side is on ZapBounce vs Hunter, and Hunter vs ZeroBounce covers another pairing. The comparisons hub lists the rest.
Test the verifier on addresses you already know
The quickest way to judge any verifier is a known-answer sample. Pull 100 addresses whose fate you're sure of: colleagues, customers who replied last month, and contacts that hard-bounced in your last campaign. Run that sample through Hunter's free monthly credits and through ZapBounce's 100 free checks.
Score each tool on two counts: how many known-good rows it marks valid, and how many known-bounced rows it marks invalid. Rows labelled unknown or catch_all go in a third column. Those are the rows your sender reputation pays for when you mail blind.
Why the hardest rows sit with a few mail hosts
Yahoo and AOL answer 250 or 252 to every RCPT TO to defeat enumeration, then bounce later, so Yahoo-hosted domains classify as catch_all. Microsoft Outlook and M365 respond inconsistently and throttle hard, and greylisting servers answer 4xx to a first probe by design. Those hosts explain most of the gap between a benchmark score and a vendor's headline.
ZapBounce runs its own SMTP check on port 25: EHLO, MAIL FROM, then RCPT TO, closing the connection before DATA so nobody receives a message. Each host's behaviour lands in one of four results, and a row that never resolves comes back unknown at no charge. How verification works walks through each step.
