ZapBounce and BigCommerce
You can verify BigCommerce customers with ZapBounce four ways: upload the customer export as a CSV, call the ZapBounce API from a webhook handler, catch our batch.completed webhook when a bulk run ends, or add a check to a Zap. Every address comes back valid, invalid, catch_all or unknown, and 1,000 checks cost $5.
A store's email list does two jobs. It carries order confirmations and shipping notices, and it feeds the platform you send campaigns from. One mistyped address hurts both, so you want a check when the account is created and a bulk pass before each sync.
Most stores start with the export, then add the real-time check on new accounts. The same pattern for a Shopify storefront is on our Shopify page.
A checkout typo ends up on your marketing list
BigCommerce saves whatever the shopper types at checkout or account signup. Someone who types gmial.com still sees the thank-you page. Then the order confirmation goes nowhere, and a support ticket arrives a day later.
That record syncs to your email platform with every other customer. Each campaign sent to it adds a hard bounce to your sender record, and it keeps adding one until somebody deletes the row.
Newsletter sign-ups from the storefront form are stored as subscribers, apart from customers. They need the same check, because a sign-up form is where bots and throwaway inboxes get in. Our disposable email glossary entry explains the flag you get back.
How the data moves
Export customers and subscribers as CSV
Export from the Customers screen in the BigCommerce control panel. Drop the file on the bulk page or post it to
POST /v1/files, and every original column comes back with the verdict beside it.Catch new accounts with BigCommerce webhooks
Subscribe to
store/customer/createdandstore/subscriber/created. BigCommerce sends just the record's id in the payload (read on docs.bigcommerce.com, 25 September 2026), so your handler looks up the address through the Customers API and then callsPOST /v1/verify.Save the verdict on the customer record
Write the result to a customer attribute or to your own database. The sync to your email platform can then skip every row marked invalid.
Run the same check in Zapier
A Zap that starts on a new BigCommerce customer runs a ZapBounce check and hands the result to the next step, such as a tag in Klaviyo or Mailchimp. You write no code for this route.
Setting it up
- Export customers from the BigCommerce control panel as a CSV, then export newsletter subscribers the same way.
- Upload both files on the bulk page or through the file upload endpoint.
- Download the results: your original columns plus the result, the role and disposable flags, and a
billedcolumn. - Suppress the invalid rows in your email platform before the next campaign goes out.
- Register the
store/customer/createdandstore/subscriber/createdwebhooks, fetch each address by id, and verify it from your server. - Keep the API key on that server. A key in storefront JavaScript is readable by every visitor.
BigCommerce: common questions
How do I verify emails in BigCommerce?
Export customers and newsletter subscribers as CSV files, verify them with ZapBounce, and suppress the invalid rows in your email platform. For new accounts, a store/customer/created webhook calls the ZapBounce API from your server. A 10,000-customer export costs $25.
Does a BigCommerce webhook include the customer's email?
No, the payload carries the customer or subscriber id. Your handler fetches the record from the BigCommerce Customers API, reads the email, and sends it to ZapBounce for a verdict.
Should an invalid verdict block a BigCommerce checkout?
Never block a paid order. Show the typo suggestion, let the order finish, and keep the invalid address off your marketing list. That protects both the sale and your sender record.
What does verifying a BigCommerce list cost?
1,000 checks cost $5 and 10,000 cost $25. Duplicates and unknown results are never billed, and credits never expire, so a seasonal store can buy once and use the credits all year.
