ZapBounce and Google Ads

Google Ads Customer Match requires a minimum number of matched users before an audience will serve. Addresses that do not match count toward your upload and not toward that threshold.

A list padded with dead addresses can therefore fail to activate an audience that your live addresses alone would have qualified for.

Unmatched addresses count toward the upload, not the audience

Google matches uploaded addresses against its own user base. An address that never existed matches nothing, so it inflates your upload count while contributing zero to the match rate.

Audiences below the minimum size do not serve, and the failure is quiet: the audience exists, shows a low match count, and delivers no impressions.

A dead address also cannot be matched by any of the other identifiers, so there is no fallback path for it.

How the data moves

  1. Verify before hashing and upload

Customer Match requires hashed addresses, and a hash of a dead address is indistinguishable from a hash of a live one.

  2. Remove definitively invalid addresses

They cannot match and they dilute your reported match rate, which is the number you use to judge the source.

  3. Keep catch-all addresses in the upload

They may correspond to real Google accounts. Unconfirmable is not the same as nonexistent.

  4. Track match rate against verification results

The gap between deliverable addresses and matched users tells you about your audience's Google account coverage.

Setting it up

  1. Verify the customer list before preparing the Customer Match upload.
  2. Remove addresses that came back definitively invalid.
  3. Keep catch-all and unknown addresses in the upload, since they may still match.
  4. Hash and upload according to Google's requirements.
  5. Compare the match rate against your deliverable count rather than the raw row count.
  6. Re-verify and re-upload on the same schedule you refresh the audience.
Should I remove unconfirmable addresses from a Customer Match upload?

No. They may correspond to real Google accounts. Remove only the definitively invalid ones.

Why is my audience not serving?

Usually below the minimum match count. Removing dead addresses does not raise the matched number, and it tells you the real ceiling.

Does a higher match rate follow from verification?

The rate against deliverable addresses becomes honest. The absolute number of matched users does not rise.
