How Rediffmail answers a probe
What the server does when we open a connection and ask about one address.
- Unknown recipients typically return a 550, and the response is usable when the connection completes.
- Akamai only answers the DNS question. The SMTP connection lands on Rediff's own server, so slow or inconsistent answers come from Rediff and not from a proxy in between.
- Rediff has run business hosting for custom domains, so an Indian company domain can resolve to this infrastructure.
- Connection reliability is the main variable rather than the honesty of the response.
The part that catches people out
What we do about it
We verify Rediffmail mailboxes normally and resist the temptation to score the domain down for being old. Dormancy is not something an SMTP probe can see, and inventing a quality score from the domain name would be exactly the behavior we criticise elsewhere.
Sending to Rediffmail mailboxes
Verification is one step. These are the things that decide whether the message lands.
- An Indian list heavy in Rediffmail addresses is old data. Check the acquisition date before blaming the send.
- Gmail dominates active Indian consumer email, so segment accordingly rather than treating the market as one audience.
- Zoho is the common business platform for Indian small firms and behaves quite differently.
Dating a list by its domain mix
Say someone offers you 20,000 Indian consumer addresses described as collected last year. Before you verify a single one, count the domains. If rediffmail.com makes up a large slice, and yahoo.co.in shows up beside it, the description doesn't fit the data. People signing up for things in India last year mostly typed a Gmail address. A Rediffmail-heavy list was assembled in an earlier decade, whatever the file's date stamp says.
That check costs nothing and takes one pivot table. Verification then tells you which of the old mailboxes still exist, and many will. It can't tell you who granted permission or when. If the seller can't produce signup dates and sources, the domain mix is your best evidence, and here it argues against buying.
Mailing a segment nobody may be reading
For Rediffmail rows you already own, separate the question of existence from the question of attention. Run verification, drop the invalids, and put the valid rows in their own segment. Then send that segment one plain re-permission message, from your normal sending domain, asking for a click to stay subscribed. Give it two weeks.
Whoever clicks goes back into the main list. Everyone else gets parked, with no further mail. It feels wasteful to shelve addresses that verified clean, but mailbox providers judge you on how recipients react, and a block of mailboxes that never open anything drags that picture down for the subscribers who do read you. Rediff also sells business mail on company domains. Both rediffmail.com and rediff.com returned the same host in our lookup on September 19, 2026, and an Indian company domain pointing there should be treated as its own tenant, with the catch-all test run first.

Many still accept mail. Whether anyone reads them is a separate question, and one no verifier can answer. A valid verdict here is about the mailbox existing, not about it being watched.
Why does the MX lookup show Akamai hostnames?
Rediff uses Akamai's DNS load balancing, so the MX record is an Akamai-managed name that hands back the address of a Rediff mail server. Akamai isn't in the SMTP path, and it does not change the underlying answer.
Should I remove Rediffmail addresses?
Judge them on engagement rather than on the domain. If the address has never opened anything and the data is old, the domain is a hint rather than the reason.
