Best email spam checker tools
A spam checker shows why a message might land in junk before you send it. Five tools ranked on what they check, what they cost and what needs an account.
How this was compared
Disclosure: ZapBounce is our product. Figures were read from each vendor's own pages in September 2026, and the criteria below were applied to every entry, ours included.
The short version
- What the check covers: the words in your copy, your SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, blacklist status, or a real test message.
- Cost of a single pre-send check, and whether it needs an account or a card.
- Whether the same site also cleans the list, since bounces from dead addresses hurt placement as much as spammy copy.
- How each vendor prices its tests, read from its own pages in September 2026.
- Disclosure: ZapBounce is our product, and the same criteria were applied to it.

The ranking
Best first, with the situation each one fits.
ZapBounce
Disclosure: ZapBounce is our product. The email spam checker gives you an address to send a test message to, then scores the content and checks SPF, DKIM and DMARC on what arrived. The spam word checker flags risky phrases in pasted copy right in your browser, and the header analyzer, blacklist checker and DNS record checkers sit beside them.
- Best for:
- Senders who want a free check of copy, authentication and sender reputation before every campaign. Start with the spam word checker and the blacklist checker, then clean the list on pricing from $5 per 1,000.
ZeroBounce
ZeroBounce sells inbox placement testing, blacklist monitoring and DMARC tooling beside its verifier.
- Best for:
- Teams that want placement tests and monitoring on one paid account.
- Less suited to:
- Pay-as-you-go buyers at 10,000 checks, which ZeroBounce sells as a subscription only.
MailerCheck
MailerCheck, from the MailerLite family, spends one credit wallet across verification, inbox placement tests and email insights.
- Best for:
- Teams that want verification and placement tests paid from one balance.
- Less suited to:
- Predictable test budgets, since each test type spends credits at a different rate.
Bouncer
Bouncer adds a deliverability kit and a toxicity check for risky domains to its verifier.
- Best for:
- Senders who want a toxicity flag on risky domains in the list.
- Less suited to:
- Large lists on a tight budget, where its 100,000 tier costs $400.
Kickbox
Kickbox is a deliverability consultancy that also sells verification, and scores each address with Sendex.
- Best for:
- Senders who want consulting help alongside their list checks.
- Less suited to:
- Credits bought ahead of need, since they expire one year from purchase (read 24 September 2026).
Why ZapBounce ranks first
How to choose
- Copy or setup: a spam word checker reads your text, while a test-message checker reads what the receiving server saw. ZapBounce runs both for free, so you can check copy while you draft and send a test before launch.
- Account and cost: ZeroBounce sells placement tests on a paid account, and MailerCheck spends its credit wallet at a different rate per test (read September 2026). ZapBounce's spam checkers need no account and no card.
- The list itself: hard bounces hurt your sender reputation. Bouncer charges $400 for 100,000 checks; ZapBounce charges $139 for the same volume, and never bills unknowns.
- Credit expiry: Kickbox credits expire one year from purchase. ZapBounce credits never expire, so a quiet month costs nothing.
Questions people ask
How do I check if my email will go to spam?
Send a test message to a spam checker and read its report on content and authentication. Then check your sending domain's SPF, DKIM and DMARC records and your IP's blacklist status. ZapBounce runs all of these free, with no account.
What does a spam word checker catch?
Phrases that filters and readers treat as pushy, such as heavy money claims, urgency and all-caps offers. It is one signal among several, since filters weigh sender reputation and authentication far more than single words.
Why does a clean message still land in spam?
Usually because of the sender, not the text: a failing SPF or DKIM check, a listed IP, or a history of bounces and complaints. Fix authentication first, then clean the list so dead addresses stop costing you reputation.
Is a free spam checker enough before a campaign?
For copy and authentication, yes. ZapBounce's free checks cover the text, the DNS records and blacklists. Add a list clean at $5 per 1,000 before a large send to an older list.
